To protect user privacy, macOS requires users to manually approve screen recording. Because IT cannot bypass this setting remotely, students must grant permission for Classwize to function. If a student isn't showing up in your dashboard, follow the steps below or send them to the Library Tech Desk.
Why is this extra step required?
Apple prevents silent screen monitoring—even by school IT—to guarantee user privacy and transparency.
Instructions for Students
Open Privacy & Security Settings
Click the Spotlight Search icon (magnifying glass) in the top-right corner of the menu bar, type Privacy & Security, and press Enter.
Navigate to Screen Recording Permissions
Scroll down the Privacy & Security menu and select Screen & System Audio Recording.
Enable Classwize Services
Locate and toggle on the switches for both of the following items:
classroom.pluginfc-system-service_darwin-amd64
(Note: If prompted, the student may need to enter their device password or Touch ID to confirm these changes).
Verify Classwize Connection
Once permissions are enabled, the student’s screen will automatically sync and appear in your Classwize session. If the student does not automatically connect, click Retry on their tile in your dashboard.
Need Additional Help?
If a student is unable to locate these settings, lacks permission to change them, or still fails to appear in Classwize after completing these steps, please direct them to the Library Technology Desk for hands-on support.
